A few more steps down the trail, and we decided to see what the purple martins were up to. These colonies of nest enclosures are modeled after gourds. When hollowed out by local native tribes, some bird species decided these were perfect places to nest. There are very few purple martin colonies in Massachusetts, but there are three in Marshfield, two at South Shore Sanctuaries we manage.
